24 Hours of Le Mans: Audi

LE MANS, France – We’ve just spent 24 hours with an Audi diesel hybrid — well, not behind the wheel, but watching it sail past from the grandstands of the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. This gruelling test of man and machine has been taking place at the 13.6-km French circuit annually since 1923, with a couple of breaks in the 1930s and ’40s, one due to a strike in 1936, and there was a 10-year cease in activities due to World War II. However, despite its lengthy history, diesel engines have only been used in competition in the last 10 years, introduced in 2006 by Audi in the R10 TDI race car.
